Webinar recording: closing UK gender pay gaps
24th May 2023

What more needs to be done?
Julia recently joined Vicky from Payscale and Michelle from Equality Pays, to discuss whether, after six years since the legislation was introduced, reporting truly is enough to make a difference and why it’s so hard to close the gender pay gap.
After six years of reporting, the overall pay gap has hardly changed. Almost 80% of companies have pay gaps in favour of men. With that in mind, the panel gave their top tips to support change:
- Go beyond the regulatory figures to understand your story and plan your actions.
- Use your pay gap data as a foundation for HR data analysis. Collect data across your talent lifecycle and assess every pay and progression point.
- Don’t try to explain away your data, own it.
- Build a team across the organisation with an influential sponsor.
- Involve employees, they can provide insight and it helps to build trust.
- Move away from short-term wins and focus on sustainable impact.
- Be transparent around pay, review all decisions through an equity lens to help managers make better decisions.
- Enhance your culture by equalising caring policies such as maternity and paternity.
- Look beyond gender to other protected characteristics such as ethnicity.
- Start early, it takes a while for actions to flow through to results.
There’s lots more great advice in the webinar recording. Watch it here.
